How Do You Get a Class A CDL (Requirements)

To get a Class A Commercial Driver’s License, you will need to visit the DMV and bring the appropriate government issued documents along with other pertinent paperwork.

After your initial visit with the DMV for your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP), you will be able to train and take your skills tests using your commercial vehicle upon your test appointment date.

What Are The Requirements To Get A Class A CDL?

To get your Class A CDL you will need the following:

Proof of Identification. Drivers who are 18 years old can only drive within their state. Drivers who are 21 years old and older can drive between states.

DOT Medical Examination Report. You must have a medical examiner issue a report for you to take to the DMV in order to prove that you are physically qualified to drive a commercial vehicle. These reports are valid for a span of up to two years.

Social Security Card (SSN). You must bring in originals to the DMV.

You must hold your Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) a minimum of 14 days. During this span of fourteen days you can practice for your skills and road tests.

After you pass your CDL examinations (Air Brakes, Pre-Inspection, Skills, On-the-Road), you will take the CDL Test Results into the DMV and get your temporary CDL in return.

How Do You Get a Class A CDL?

For you to apply for your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) you must have held your CLP for a minimum of 14 days and do the following:

Schedule your test appointment. All CDL examinations must have appointments made for them.

Bring your commercial vehicle to the DMV to test with.

Pass the CDL skills tests. This includes air brakes, pre-inspection, basic control skills and road tests. You get three attempts to pass. If you fail your three attempts you must pay a fee to retake these skills tests.
