The only time I wouldn’t suggest that you get your Hazmat endorsement is if you don’t have any trucking experience whatsoever.
Jobs are extremely unlikely to hire you for hazmat transportation with anything less than a year or two of verifiable experience.
What are the steps to getting a hazmat endorsement?
Requirements for Hazmat Endorsement include:
(1) Apply for the Hazmat endorsement at your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for the specific requirements for your state.
(2) Complete the Hazmat Endorsement Threat Assessment Program; a background check which involves fingerprinting, criminal history review, and immigration status verification.
(3) Pass the Hazmat Knowledge Exam
When you successfully complete all of the above, you will receive an “H” on your CDL to indicate that you are certified to transport hazardous materials.
Note: If you already hold a Tanker “N” Endorsement when you acquire your Hazmat “H” endorsement, both certifications will be indicated on your CDL as an “X”.
Can you get a hazmat endorsement with a felony?
All of the following could disqualify you from receiving your Hazmat “H” endorsement:
- Having been found guilty of a serious crime involving hazardous materials in the past ten (10) years (i.e. trafficking explosives, stealing dangerous materials)
- Being tested positive for alcohol or drugs while operating a commercial motor vehicle
- Having been convicted of certain traffic violations or causing an accident in the past three (3) years
- Having a medical condition that could interfere with safe driving practices and put civilians at risk (i.e. epilepsy)
- Prior suspension or revocation of Commercial Driver License
- Being under twenty-one (21) years old
- Operating a vehicle without required safety equipment
How Much Does a Hazmat Test Cost?
In 2024, a Hazmat endorsement will cost you between $110 and $150.
Some states will add a $30 fee to include the Hazmat “H” or “X” endorsement on your Commercial Driver License.
Although the TSA screening will cost $86.50, the additional cost depends on whether your state requires you to pay for your knowledge test and new/renewal application.
